This thing.
In France it is called “ Violet “ and I still don’t know exactly what it is but it is a seafood.
Closed, it looks like a spongy dry potato.
The first time I saw them was at my local supermarket. I wanted to give it a try as I am a rather adventurous eater so I bought a couple of those.
They are very easy to open, you just have to cut them with a sharp knife.
Inside is this weird looking cooked yolk thingy surrounded by a cartilaginous white inside “ shell “.
The texture is close to raw mussels and it smells of oysters. I thought that’s what they would eventually taste like, nothing hardcore.
I was at my parents place and they were both looking at that thing, concerned.
I pressed a bit of lemon. Took a spoon. Scooped out one half.
“THE TASTE I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE OMG WHAT ON EARTH IS THIS OMG “
Mind you, I am a huge seafood aficionado and I tasted some really weird stuff.
I am french-vietnamese, I can eat super smelly strong cheese and Durian.
I could eat both at the same time.
But this thing knocked me off my socks.
It tasted like something has been left, rotting in the sun, by the ocean, in the mud.
I split it out and had to wash my teeth right away.
I told my dad - who can’t make the difference if you put salt in his coffee - to give it a try.
He scooped out the other half, looked at me with dignity and said :
-Anne … I think you should stop buying those things.
And because I am stupid, next time I see them, I’ll give it another try. I want to know why it is considered a delicacy.
