Overview :
It is an infectious disease characterized by severe form of pneumonia
Etiology :
- Causing agent - Legionella bacteria
- Mechanism of transmission - Inhalation of aerosols provided by cooling towers and air conditioners
Risk people :
- Older age (>50 age)
- Smokers
- With lung disease (COPD or Emphysema)
- Weak immune system from disease like cancer, diabetes or kidney failure
Clinical Features :
- Incubation period : 2-10 days
- Temperature - 40°C
- Headache, fever
- Cough(mucus), shortness of breath
- Chest Pain
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea
- Muscle pain
- Severe pneumonia
- Pontiac fever
Diagnosis :
- Blood test
- Bacteriological test (sputum, lung biopsy)
- Fluorescent method
- Serological ELISA
- Chest X ray
Treatment :
- Anti bacterial Therapy
- Tetracycline (25mg/kg)
- Rifampin
- Macrolides
- Ketolides
- Intoxication - solution of glucose (20-30 ml/kg)
- Anti-inflammation - prednisilone (2-3 mg)
- Anti-vomiting - Paspertin
