Overview :

It is an infectious disease characterized by Central Nervous System wrilation followed by paralysis and death

Etiology :

  1. Causative agent - Rhabdoviruses
  2. Mechanism of transportation - Bites

Clinical Features :

  1. Incubation period : 20-90 days
  2. Fever, changes of mood, flu like symptoms
  3. Hydrophobia, Aerophobia
  4. Spasms affect diaphragm, sternomastoideus
  5. Hyper salivation, lacri-motion, sweating, fluctuating blood pressure
  6. Furious Rabies progress to coma and later death

Diagnosis :

  1. Immunofluroscence of acetone fixed brain or spinal cord impression smears
  2. ELISA test
  3. Examination of CNS tissue
  4. Neutrophil leuckocytosis is commonly found in blood

Treatment :

  1. Human rabies is incurable
  2. Heavy sedation and analgesia given to relieve agonizing symptoms
