Overview :
It is an infectious disease characterized by Central Nervous System wrilation followed by paralysis and death
Etiology :
- Causative agent - Rhabdoviruses
- Mechanism of transportation - Bites
Clinical Features :
- Incubation period : 20-90 days
- Fever, changes of mood, flu like symptoms
- Hydrophobia, Aerophobia
- Spasms affect diaphragm, sternomastoideus
- Hyper salivation, lacri-motion, sweating, fluctuating blood pressure
- Furious Rabies progress to coma and later death
Diagnosis :
- Immunofluroscence of acetone fixed brain or spinal cord impression smears
- ELISA test
- Examination of CNS tissue
- Neutrophil leuckocytosis is commonly found in blood
Treatment :
- Human rabies is incurable
- Heavy sedation and analgesia given to relieve agonizing symptoms
