I will give a practical answer, unlike the sarcastic and misguided ones I've seen here. As a liberal, and more importantly an immigrant liberal, I think what Donald Trump is doing right is more symbolic than anything else.

American liberals have never needed something more in their lives. I would never vote for him, but he is, in my opinion, the best thing that has happened to this country in modern history.

When Donald Trump announced his candidacy, I chuckled to my peers and said ‘check out your new president', everyone laughed. I repeated that I was serious. I said ‘he's going to win because he's America's morning face. He will be chosen because he is most familiar to your truest self and you guys need a break from your makeup'. They either misunderstood it or denied it.

One’s morning face is their truest face. It is the face before the first wash, the shave, the tweeze, the mouthwash, the makeup. The face that we habitually ‘fix up’ before we face the world. Most people don't identify as their morning faces (‘oh that's just the ugly side of me’) as it only exists in the mirror for 2 seconds before we mask it, and is hidden [or so we think] for the remaining 24 hours of the day.

Donald Trump, his ideologies, his rhetoric, his culture, his attitude — is reflective of that which we foreigners (in almost every nation) learn about America (as a nation, not necessarily a people) in our high school history classes. The way he governs his people is the way that America has done so with the rest of the world. The way that American liberals speak about him is the way most countries speak about America - allies and enemies alike. The language is almost identical actually.

The reality is that this is what America needed. It needed to run out of foundation and mascara, lose its tweezers and shaving cream. It needed to see what the rest of the world sees and accept the flaws so it can start drinking more water and practice better self care. Liberals' reactions right now are more along the lines of ‘omg I have wrinkles and greys, this isn't me, so I need plastic surgery’.

Stop. This is you. Whereas Obama was reflective of your compassion, your diversity, your popularity, etc., (the you that immigrants like myself fell in love with). Donald Trump too is reflective of who you've always been as a nation. He is your narcissism, your love of capital & material, your love of control and recognition, your denial of wrongdoing and your pride in being seen and treated as #1.

America is still beautiful, you just need therapy.
