If you really want to do something uncomfortable that has real value, keep track of EVERY PENNY you spend for several months. That includes auto repairs and Wawa coffee. It includes fries from 5Guys as well as life insurance. And don't pre-skimp, but get an accurate accounting of your spending.
Another way to make this sort of pain useful, is to pay cash for everything you can.. no credit cards or checks. It has been made clear that if you have to reach in your wallet and pull out cash, you will often think twice about how much you NEED something.
Then take that new remainder of resources, and put it in savings or pay down your debt.
