Be there for them. Teach them where to go for answers. An example might be to turn to a real lawyer for advice. How do you pick one. What are proper referrals as opposed to only asvertisement.
Look up how to perform and write a Science report. WHY? This a good way to demonstrate problem solving skills, ways to approach a problem and examining the facts. This should also increase their ability to master their feelings. Instead of feeling helpless they will understand how to find a direction.
Show them love.
As a parent, working on yourself esteem can help. This is not an attack but as the mother to a special needs child, I have learned this is a waste of time. Your lack of money can be a good thing. By not having every thing handed to them, your children learn skills to navigate the world.
My husband and I disagree tremendously in this area. In my opinion, his spoiling our special needs son has made teaching self help skills that are already extremely difficult manifold worse.
